Home & Garden Trends 2019

Australians are increasingly spending more and more time outside and in the garden, causing a shift in the way we design our homes.

In 2019, there is an increased focus on natural and handcrafted elements both inside and outside the house, and in this blog, we will discuss how these features can be accentuated.

Window Gardens

A window garden is a garden designed specifically for looking at through a window. It can be aesthetically appealing from outside too but the emphasis is on improving the internal aesthetic and ambience by crowding a window with beautiful plants. It is not a new idea but with the increasingly small spaces afforded for gardens and balconies in dense inner city environments, it is a good way to make the most of interfaces between the inside and external world.

Window gardens need not only be aesthetically pleasing like flower boxes but can also be functional such as food gardens producing herbs or medicinal plants.

Home Sanctuaries

Sanctuaries are making a comeback in the world of interiors and gardens this year. A sanctuary is a place to relax and unwind, a place to practice mindfulness and a place to take time for oneself. While the art of a sanctuary is embedded in creating a lasting feeling of peace that permeates the rest of your daily life, the practical reality is that defining a delineated space to cultivate these feelings is extremely important.

One example of a home sanctuary is a small outdoor area with a bench and a water feature or fairy garden to distract the mind. Another example might be a folding screen that you deploy around an armchair inside the house so that it is obviously a place not to be disturbed.

Habitat Awareness

Australians are placing greater focus on the way our actions shape the climate of our cities. There is an increasing recognition that we must facilitate the ongoing survival of native plants and animals by allowing these species the use of our private property as habitat. This trend manifests itself through the promotion of bird baths, planting native trees, shrubs and flowers and installing bird houses.

Motorised Awnings

There has been a steady rise in the concept of outdoor entertaining and alfresco dining as synonymous with Australian culture. To make the most of the incredibly diverse and beautiful outdoor settings that have sprung up, it makes sense to install motorised awnings so that shade can be deployed with the press of a button, or automatically using sensors or schedules on your phone.

Thanks to Somfy’s compatibility with IFTTT, you can also ask your Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa to control your awning for you!
