What Will Homes Look Like in 50 Years?

With the advancements in modern technology moving at such a rapid pace, you can be excused for picturing a Jetsons cartoon or a sci-fi film when imagining what homes will look like in 50 years’ time.

Predictions are difficult - but with technology going the way it is, we can certainly make some reasonable estimations of how homes will look like in the future. After all, Minority Report - a 2002 Steven Spielberg film correctly predicted the present with retina and facial recognition, personalised advertising, gesture based user interfaces, voice automated homes, and driverless cars.

So with the continuous rapid advancement in the technology we already have, along with some educated guesses - here are some of our predictions on how homes will look like in 50 years:

They Might Be Located In Different Areas

Homes being built on top of land might be considered pretty generic in 50 years’ time. Homes may have different exteriors because they are located underground or on water. They might be tapping into their own energy sources more efficiently, which will allow them to be located closer to the ground or on water. They’ll be far more advanced than your regular houseboat or basement building ever could be.

Homes Will Run Seamlessly with Technology

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the inter-connectivity of devices, vehicles, buildings and other items. They use on-board sensors and software to collect and share data. While in 2016, we are still in the early days of this industry - fifty years from now will see a much more mature market with highly advanced products that are more robust having been iterated upon in multiple model generations.

Picture your refrigerator letting you know exactly what groceries are in it, and your GPS tracker syncing with your home automation to turn your lights and heater on when you are 5km away from home. This will be how homes will interact with smartphone technology to bring you more convenience and security than you ever thought possible. Facial recognition outside homes will raise security levels and even kitchen bench tops could become completely interactive.

Home Automation run by artificial intelligence in the form of a virtual personal assistant similar to Siri, Cortana, or even Iron Man’s Jarvis could power almost every single aspect of your solar powered home – from your bathroom features - such as shower nozzles and toilets, to your garage - which will wirelessly charge your vehicle, to your lawns, your bedrooms, and more.

Interior Design Will Be Sleek and Neutral

Less will be more in 50 years’ time when it comes to interior design. With everything at the push of a button, there will be no need for dials on ovens, cords attached to blinds or clutter to remain seen. Hidden entertainment systems, bookcase and even beds will become more and more popular, becoming visible with one simple click.
